What is REST?

REST (Representational State Transfer) is an architectural style for designing networked applications. It relies on stateless, client-server communication.

HTTP Methods

  • GET - Retrieve resources
  • POST - Create new resources
  • PUT - Update entire resources
  • PATCH - Partial updates
  • DELETE - Remove resources

URL Structure

Keep your URLs clean and intuitive:

GET /api/users
GET /api/users/:id
POST /api/users
PUT /api/users/:id
DELETE /api/users/:id

Status Codes

Use appropriate HTTP status codes:

  • 200 - Success
  • 201 - Created
  • 400 - Bad Request
  • 401 - Unauthorized
  • 404 - Not Found
  • 500 - Server Error

Versioning

Version your API to maintain backward compatibility:

/api/v1/users
/api/v2/users

Best Practices

  • Use nouns for resource names, not verbs
  • Implement pagination for large datasets
  • Add filtering and sorting capabilities
  • Provide comprehensive error messages
  • Document your API thoroughly
